It was a cool, crisp autumn evening, with the rays of the sun setting the golden leaves of a park’s trees ablaze in its light. In this autumn sunset a couple walked hand in hand by the park’s edge. Some passers by took notice of the two as they passed, while others ignored them. Though most who noticed them would mutter under their breath in annoyed tones, most likely out of envy. Others thought they made a lovely couple; they almost reminded them of one of those stock images that littered the Internet.
The couple continued unaware of all around them, too caught up in the moment. They had only started dating a couple of months ago, but already a deep bond had grown between them; the boy, Anthony was considering proposing. Sure he knew it was a bit rushed, but Anthony knew he was entirely captivated by his girlfriend, Kim. Kim could say the same about her boyfriend.
As they approached one of the entrances into the park, Anthony broke the silence between them.
“We should go there, it would be a nice end to the day.” Anthony proposed.
Kim agreed to this thinking it a wonderful idea, but wished that maybe she should say no. Looking at the sunset the colors had lost some of their brilliance as nighttime approached. Kim was not a huge fan of the dark, and she knew that if they took an extra detour through the park it would grow dark before they could leave, but the idea of staying a little while longer with her boyfriend on such a nice evening walk made her uncertainties vanish.
The grass throughout the park was littered here and there by fallen leaves some still golden, while others were brown and crisp. Their feet made a crunching noise whenever one of their feet stepped upon the leaves. At the moment this was the only noise that passed between the two. After some time Kim asked to sit for a while; a little tired from walking most of the afternoon. Now there was barely any light around them except for a few lampposts that lined the concrete path. Coming across a bench the couple sat upon it, and cuddled up to one another. Again no words passed between them, just their simple joy of just being together was all that was needed. A phone vibrated, interrupting their silent bliss. Anthony checked to see it was his; on the screen was the name, Mom.
“Sorry, but I’m going to have to reply to this.” Anthony said, his face set in a pathetic, apologetic look.
“It’s fine,” Kim said, “It’s from your mom isn't it? Go ahead I know how she gets.”
No sooner had she said that, Anthony’s phone vibrated once again, another text from his persistent mother. He opened the message to see a drawn out text, which was going to take some thinking of how to respond. Kim let out a small indistinguishable noise beside him. A reply then came to mind and he began typing away. Once he was finished, he pocketed his phone and looked towards Kim, about to ask her if she wanted to go home. His question froze before he uttered a single word as he saw the deep gash that crossed her neck. Her head leaned back; her eyes were set in a permanent wide-eyed gaze of shock, her mouth slightly agape. Anthony almost let out a panicked scream and started pushing himself upright off of the bench, but theses actions were interrupted as a pale hand seized the front of his shirt accompanied by a,
It was then that Anthony focused his gaze on a man’s dark, unblinking eyes that stared wide into his. Shock stopped any scream; there was simply no noise between either. The owner of those terrible eyes grinned a toothy smile; no, he had been smiling earlier, but maybe not, after all a permanent unnatural wide smile was carved into his face.
Anthony shivered, his eyes opened wider and he clenched his teeth in a grimace. He tried to twist away from the man, but it was no use. The man’s free hand rose revealing a large kitchen knife that he gripped tightly within it. He pulled his arm back, and right before he brought it down he said the last words and sound Anthony would ever hear again,
“Go to Sleep!”
The knife came down making its way deep into Anthony’s body and his body went limp.
Morning came and an early morning jogger made their way through the park that was accented by its golden autumn leaves. As they continued their way down one of the numerous paths they noticed a couple sitting together on a park bench. Nothing too strange, but as the jogger got closer, they could see it wasn't normal sight at all. Wide smiles had been carved into the couple’s faces, their hands clasped together. To the jogger it was enough to send them screaming the other direction away from the grisly image. However, to the one who left them that way, couldn't help but notice what a beautiful couple they made.
